Family Troops
Converting Your Troop to the Family Troop Model
Beginning December 15, 2025, the Family Troop model becomes a permanent third chartering option in Scouting America. This model allows chartered organizations to operate one Scouts BSA troop that serves both boys and girls, replacing the need for separate troops or the previous pilot “combined” model.
This page outlines the process for charter partners and unit leaders who wish to convert an existing troop—or pair of troops—into a Family Troop.
What Is a Family Troop?
A Family Troop is a single Scouts BSA troop that includes both male and female youth members, operating under one charter, one committee, and one leadership structure. Patrols remain single-gender, but the troop operates as a unified unit.
Who Can Convert?
Any chartered organization may choose to convert:
-
A single existing troop (boy or girl)
-
Both a boy and girl troop currently operating separately
-
A pilot “combined” troop transitioning out of the pilot program
How to Convert to a Family Troop
If your charter partner operates two troops (one boy, one girl), begin at Step 1.
If your charter partner operates only one troop, skip to Step 2.
Step 1 — Charter Partner Conversations
(For Chartering Organizations with Both a Boy & Girl Troop, or previously not a part of the Pilot Program)
The charter partner must meet with each troop’s leadership to determine if both units want to move to the Family Troop model.
If both troops agree, they must:notify thier District Executive
Step 2 — Determine the Leadership Structure
The unit committee and charter partner work together to decide who will serve as:
-
Scoutmaster
-
Committee Chair
-
Committee Members
-
Assistant Scoutmasters
Important: If girls are present at any meeting or activity, the unit must have at least one registered female adult leader in attendance.
Step 3 — Submit the “Intent to Convert” Form
Once leadership roles are finalized, the troop completes the Intent to Convert form and submits it to your District Executive.
This form is used at the council level only and is not sent to the National Office.
Step 4 — Verify Your Roster
After the merge or conversion is processed:
-
Review the troop roster in my.scouting
-
Ensure no Scouts or adults were dropped during the transition
If you have questions or need assistance with any part of the process, please contact your District Executive or the Council Service Center.
